When you log an entry in ENCODED, you're prompted to photograph the page from your ENCODED Anchor Journal. It's a fair question: why upload the photo instead of just marking the entry complete?

The short answer: marking an entry complete records that you trained. Uploading the photo preserves what you trained — and that difference matters more than it might seem right now.

The handwriting is the practice — that's why the physical Anchor Journal sits at the centre of ENCODED. But handwritten pages live in one notebook, on one shelf.

Every entry you photograph becomes part of your permanent training record inside ENCODED: a complete, personal archive of your journey — every morning imprint, every evening close, every shift in how you think and write over weeks and months.

A checkmark can't capture any of that. The photo can.

We're building toward the ability for ENCODED to read and understand your handwritten entries — so your archive can do more than sit in storage.

The direction we're working toward: your AI Coach drawing on your actual entries to recognize recurring themes, track shifts in your language and mindset, and surface patterns across your entire journey that are impossible to see day to day.

We're not putting a date on this — we'd rather ship it right than ship it fast. But here's the part that matters today:

These capabilities are being designed to work backwards through your archive. Everything you upload now is preserved and ready. An entry that was only marked complete — or never captured at all — can't be part of that picture later.

Your entries are personal, and we treat them that way. Photos of your journal pages are securely stored and encrypted, just like all of your other ENCODED data. They're part of your account and your training record.
